A living monument
San Pietro’s story began before the great Franciscan basilicas. Its quiet Romanesque character remains distinct within the sacred landscape of Assisi.
Visitor informationMonks established a religious community on a site associated with Assisi’s earliest Christian history.
Pope Innocent IV consecrated the rebuilt church, whose façade was completed in 1268.
San Pietro forms part of Assisi’s UNESCO World Heritage designation and its exceptional sacred landscape.
The church remains open for worship while the adjoining house offers religious hospitality.
Who we are
The abbey is cared for by the Suore Vittime Espiatrici di Gesù Sacramentato, often known as the Sacramentine Sisters. The congregation was founded in Naples in 1878 by Saint Maria Cristina Brando.
Their life centres on the Eucharist, community and service. Here in Assisi, the Sisters care for the house, welcome its guests and pray for everyone who enters.
“We are here to keep this place a house of prayer, welcome and quiet reflection.”
The city beyond the door
From the abbey, Assisi unfolds on foot: medieval lanes, ancient churches and places shaped by lives of humility, peace and radical hospitality.
Come and stay
San Pietro is just inside Assisi’s historic centre. The bus stops at Piazza Giovanni Paolo II and Viale G. Marconi are a short walk away.
Faith · beauty · stillness
